Durham's population is only about 40.000 inhabitants, however, it has plenty of churches . Actually, I have never seen such an amount of churches in such a small place – 13 in total! A stone throw from one church... you'll see already another one. The cathedral continues to be the mother of them all. And a cloisters is located next to the huge building.
Only non-laymen had the permission to attend services in medieval times. As a consequence a church had to be erected for the city's garrison. During the reformation new Anglican churches were built. In the 18th century the Methodist movement emerged. Once again natural stone was turned into churches. All except one are temporary in use. Upon that church a landlord put his sign.
